Huskies Fourth at BIG EAST Championship

2023 BIG EAST Championship Results

KENOSHA, Wisc. – The UConn women's cross country team took home a fourth place finish at the 2023 BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP on Saturday afternoon from the Wayne Dannehl Course in Kenosha, Wisconsin. 

 Three Huskies notched All-BIG EAST performances on Saturday led by junior Chloe Thomas (Dundad, Ontario) who earned first team honors after a seventh place finish in the field of 99 runners.  Earning second team honors was senior Jenna Zydanowicz (West Hartford, Conn.) in 11th place and senior Caroline Towle (Bedford, Mass.)  in 16th place.  

UConn finished with a total of 89 points to finish just behind Villanova in third with 80 points.  The Georgetown Hoyas took home the team title for a fourth-straight season.  The Hoyas finished with 28 points.  In second place was Providence with 56 points.

Thomas crossed the line in 20:34.60 to record to match her highest ever finish at a BIG EAST race (2021) and earn all-conference honors for the third year.

Zydanowicz just missed a top-10 finish with a time of 20:55.94 for an 11th place finish, her best finish at the event since the 2021 championship (6th).  Towle came across the line in 21:12.53 for 16th to earn All-BIG EAST honors for the first time in her career. 

Freshman Malin Rahm (Schaffhausen, Switzerland) was the Huskies fourth finisher, placing 25th with a time of 21:40.38.  Junior Rachael Woodruff (Saranac, N.Y.) finished 31st with a time of 21:49.40, senior Sophie Coughlin (Melbourne, Australia) was 35th in 21:56.95 and sophomore Chloe Trudel (Amherst, N.H.) was 38th in 22:00.84.

"We made tremendous strides this season," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "The regular season was great preparation for this championship.We came in and competed hard. The young women are learning great competitive strategies and are very athletically conscious in how to run in this sport, compete in this sport, and I have been impressed.

The Huskies will be back in action on November 10th at the NCAA Northeast Regional in New Rochelle, N.Y.
