Huskies Fall to Seton Hall
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team fell to Seton Hall in BIG EAST opening weekend Saturday night.
Seton Hall would start off strong in the first set going on an early 6-0 scoring run to force a UConn timeout at 7-2. The Pirates kept the strong offense going as they would pull ahead quickly pushing the lead to 12-3. The Huskies hung close through the middle of the set as they would dwindle the deficit to six, but the Pirates would hold strong and take the first set 25-16.
The Pirates would keep strong play going early in the second set pulling ahead with a 7-2 lead. The Huskies would then fight back putting together a 3-0 scoring run and staying within two points at 9-7. UConn would stay close with Seton Hall, but the Pirates would find the answer to break through the defense. After the second UConn timeout, Seton Hall would keep control of the offensive plays and would round out the set 25-18. At the end of the set, Emma Werkmeister and Taylor Pannell put up a combined nine kills and four blocks.
In the third set, it was UConn's turn to get on an early run as it tacked on four straight points and held a 10-6 lead. Seton Hall would take a short lead in the middle of the set, but UConn would force the Pirates to take a timeout at 18 apiece. The Huskies would roll ahead to take a two-point lead at 24-22, but the Pirates would come roaring back to tie it and secure the third set 28-26, winning in three sets.
The Huskies will next host Marquette in the first conference home opener of the season on Saturday, Sept. 30. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
