Volleyball Returns Home to Host Georgetown & Seton Hall
STORRS, Conn.- UConn volleyball (12-2, 0-2 BIG EAST) returns home this weekend to continue conference play. The Huskies were stymied on the road against Creighton and Marquette this past weekend and will look to get their first BIG EAST wins of the season against Georgetown and Seton Hall at the UConn Volleyball Center. The Huskies are led by OH Emma Werkmeister on the offensive end. The Junior from Victor, N.Y. is first on the team with 192 kills this season, with 22 coming last weekend in the two road matches. Werkmeister is also top 5 in the country in service aces (37) and aces per set (0.76). Senior Setter Doga Kutlu conducts the attack for the Huskies, with 506 assists. Earlier this season, Kutlu reached 1,000 assists in her UConn career. Defensively, Audrey Rome anchors UConn with 58 blocks on the season. Grad Taylor Pannell is top 3 in blocks (30) and kills (112).
Georgetown Snapshot (7-7, 0-2 BE)
Similar to UConn, Georgetown is looking to bounce back after two losses to open BIG EAST play, falling to Villanova and St. John's last weekend.
Players to Watch: The Hoyas are led by standout freshman outside hitter Dionna Mitchell. Mitchell leads the team in kills with 181, including a season-high 22 against George Washington on 9/14. This performance earned Mitchell BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week on 9/16 after taking home the award the week before. Sophomore setter Emily Wen conducts the offense with 359 assists. Defensively, junior Middle Blocker Vaughan Anoa'I tops the Hoyas with 51 blocks, and senior Libero Karis Park has registered 188 digs.
Coach: AJ Bonetti is in his second season at the helm for Georgetown. In his first season last year, the Hoyas went 14-16 and 5-13 BIG EAST play, with two of those wins coming against the Huskies.
History: UConn has gone 9-5 against Georgetown in the matchups between the two since the 2006 season, with the Huskies last win coming in Washington D.C. on 10/28/22 before dropping the two matches in 2023.
Seton Hall Snapshot (6-7, 0-2 BE)
The Pirates come into Storrs also looking for their first BIG EAST win after dropping matches to St. John's and Villanova to open conference play. Seton Hall will play Providence on the road Friday night before coming to Connecticut.
Players to Watch: Senior Reagan Merk, a senior transfer from San Diego State leads Seton Hall with 125 kills and is second in digs with 149. Senior setter Maddie Klunger builds the foundation for the Pirate attack with 313 assists. Junior middle blocker Asli Subasili steadies the Pirates with a team-leading 36 blocks, and L/DS Rylee Nelson has 185 digs for the Hall.
Coach: Shannon Thompson is in her third season as head coach for Seton Hall. Each season, the Pirates have improved under Thompson, increasing their conference win total from six to eight from 2022 to 2023. Last season under Thompson's direction, the Pirates went 14-15 and 8-10 in the conference, with two wins over the Huskies.
History: Since 2006, UConn is 8-6 against Seton Hall. Recently, the Pirates have controlled the matchups, winning the last four against the Huskies dating back to 2022. UConn's last win in the series came on 9/24/21, defeating the Hall in Storrs.
Alumni Recognition: Before the match on Saturday, UConn will celebrate the banner 1994 and 1998 teams that won the BIG EAST Regular Season Championships.
