Huskies Fall To St. John's In Conference Opener
Queens, New York - The University of Connecticut fell to St. John's in their conference opener Friday night. Graduate Student Cera Powell led the Huskies with eight total kills.
UConn got out to a slow start in set one as the Red Storm jumped out to an early 6-1 lead. The Huskies eventually found their stride after back-to-back kills by junior Taylor Pannell, and following an ace by sophomore Emma Werkmeister the Huskies were able to tie the game. After trading points back and forth, three errors by UConn forced the Huskies to call a timeout. Following the timeout, St. John's continued to attack and extend their lead forcing UConn to call their second timeout. UConn tried to fight their way back, but the lead was too much to overcome as St. John's took set one by a final of 25-18.
The second set was all Red Storm as the Huskies were unable to generate any offensive momentum. For the set, the Huskies recorded more hitting errors (9) than kills (8). The Huskies kept the set close to start, but untimely errors killed any momentum the Huskies were building and allowed the Red Storm to go on multiple scoring runs. St. Johns would go on to take set two by a final of 25-13.
Set three followed the same trend as the first two sets, with the Huskies and Red Storm battling early. UConn looked like the found their stride early in the set forcing St. John's to call their first timeout of the whole match, but following the timeout, the Red Storm bounced back and took control of the match. UConn continued to battle, but the experience of the Red Storm showed, as they would build momentum and prevent UConn from any counter attacks. St. Johns would go on to take the final set by a final of 25-13 to complete the sweep.
The Huskies will be back in action tomorrow September 23 as they travel to New Jersey to take on Seton Hall. The game can be streamed live on Flo Sports.
