Volleyball Hosts DePaul and Xavier This Weekend
STORRS, Conn.- UConn volleyball (21-5, 9-5 BE) wraps up their 2024 home slate this weekend, in two crucial matches against DePaul University and Xavier University. The Huskies come home after splitting their road trip last weekend. UConn was swept last Friday against Seton Hall and responded with a four-set victory over Georgetown Sunday afternoon.
Hanna Tylska was front and center in the win on Sunday, with a team-high 19 kills, chipping in 12 digs and 2 aces as well. Doga Kutlu averaged 10.14 assists/set in the two matches, with 45 assists and 17 digs on Sunday. UConn welcomed back offensive power, in the form of Emma Werkmeister, who made her first start on Friday since her injury in October, chipping in 7 kills in more extended floor time.
Tourney Watch
Currently, the BIG EAST standings see five teams jockeying for four spots in Omaha at the BIG EAST Tournament, with Creighton and Marquette far ahead of the pack. UConn is tied for third in the conference at 9-5 with DePaul. St. John's comes into the weekend at 8-7, Xavier at 7-7 and Villanova at 7-8.
DePaul Snapshot (17-9, 9-5 BIG EAST)
The Blue Demons roll into Storrs after splitting their matches last weekend, losing to St. John's on Friday in Queens before bouncing back in a five-set victory at Villanova Saturday. BIG EAST kill leader OH Jill Pressly is always a name to watch for DePaul, averaging 4.20 kills/set in conference play. On Saturday, however, the Blue Demons were led by MB Aly Kindleberger, who had a career-high 22 kills. Pressly had her 14th double-double of the year in the win, with 17 kills and 13 digs, along with 5 blocks. The 78 kills from DePaul was tied for the most by a team in a single match this year.
UConn is looking to avenge their loss to DePaul earlier this year, suffering a four-set defeat in Chicago on October 27th. Pressly led the Blue Demons with 17 kills and 15 digs, while UConn's Tylska had 14 for the road team in the defeat.
Xavier Snapshot (9-15, 7-7 BIG EAST)
Xavier looks to snap their three-match losing skid, suffering losses against Villanova and St. John's on the road last weekend to slide into the middle of the road in the conference. OH/DS Emma Grace paced the Musketeers with double-digit kills in each match, with 18 and 10 on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Setter Logan Flaugh ranks second in the conference with 10.58 assists/set. MB Margo Kemp comes in at third in the conference, with a hitting percentage at .363.
Last time these two teams met, X got the best of the Huskies in five sets at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati. Anna Taylor led the charge with 17 kills, with Grace not far behind with 16.
Weekend Note
Prior to the match on Friday night, UConn will recognize their three seniors (Carly Furlong, Doga Kutlu, and Taylor Pannell) for their hard work and contribution to the volleyball program throughout their time as Huskies. If UConn were to win both matches, they would finish the season undefeated at home.
