Huskies Start Season 3-0, Sweep Sacred Heart
STORRS, Conn.- The UConn Volleyball team (3-0) wrapped up their season-opening weekend tournament against in-state opponent Sacred Heart University (2-1) Sunday afternoon at the UConn Volleyball Center with a commanding performance in front of a raucous home crowd, defeating the Pioneers in straight sets.
The Huskies battled back from 5+ point deficits multiple time in the first set. Emma Werkmeister came out of the gate in a strong way, with 4 kills to help the Huskies battle back and force Sacred Heart into a timeout late in the set. A flurry of clutch UConn plays gave the home squad the first frame, 25-23.
Carrying the strong momentum over into the second set, the Huskies blitzed SHU with a 6-1 run that again caused a Pioneer timeout. Audrey Rome paced UConn with 3 kills early in the set. A strong defensive attack, punctuated by multiple blocks, carried the Huskies throughout Set 2 to build a 19-12 lead. A dominant performance in the frame was closed out by a Jess Perry kill, giving UConn a commanding 2-0 set lead.
Both teams traded errors back and forth in the third set, with neither side establishing much of a rhythm. Perry, Grace Maria, and Anna Herman continued to put the pressure on Sacred Heart, with kills to put UConn in complete control all afternoon, as the Huskies finished off a sweep off their in-state opponent, 3 sets to 0.
Of note: For the first time since 2016, UConn has started season 3-0.
Up Next: The Huskies travel to Hamilton, N.Y. for a weekend tournament against three opponents: host Colgate (Friday 9/6), Stony Brook (Saturday 9/7), and Buffalo (Sunday 9/8). Sacred Heart takes on Seton Hall in South Orange, New Jersey on September 6th.
