Huskies Fall to Red Storm on Saturday Evening
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn volleyball team (7-19, 2-12 BIG EAST) fell to conference opponent, St John's (20-6, 12-2 BIG EAST), on Saturday evening at home in three sets. The Huskies kept it close as Emma Werkmeister and Cera Powell led the attack with a combined 16 kills and 13 digs.
The Huskies stayed competitive in the first set, tying the game five times and only falling short five points to the St. John's Red Storm, 25-20. UConn took the lead at 10-9 on an attack error by the Red Storm after knotting the game up on a service ace. That was the only lead the Huskies had as they battled it out on the court. Powell led the UConn attack with four kills on 10 attempts. Doga Kutlu served the only ace of the first set between the two teams, while Karly Berkland had four digs.
The second set started slowly for the Huskies, as they were forced to take a timeout early after a 6-1 run by the Red Storm. UConn continued to battle back, with 11 total kills, three apiece from Werkmeister and Audrey Rome. While they never tied the game up, they did come close on a 5-1 run late into the set to make it 25-21.
UConn took the lead 8-7 in the third set, with seven total tie scores. Werkmeister had a standout set with five kills on nine total attempts, including four digs and a block. As the game went on, the Huskies fell short as the Red Storm capitalized on a scoring run kills, blocks, and UConn service errors. The Huskies lost the final set 25-18, conceding to St John's in three.
