Huskies Finish Regular Season Against St. John's & Nova
STORRS, Conn.- UConn volleyball (22-6, 10-6 BIG EAST) concludes the 2024 regular season this weekend, having already clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Huskies will head to Queens on Friday to take on St. John's before wrapping up the season against Villanova in Philadelphia Saturday.
UConn fell to DePaul last Friday, suffering their first and only home loss of the season, but responded with a bounceback sweep win over Xavier on Saturday. Junior OH Emma Werkmeister had her best performance since returning from injury, closing out the UConn victory on Saturday with her match-leading 16th kill. Freshman Libero McKenna Brand took home Defensive Player of the Week honors, averaging a conference best 5.50 digs/set in the 1-1 weekend for the Huskies.
St. John's Snapshot (20-10, 9-7 BIG EAST)
Like UConn, St. John's has protected their homecourt this season, putting together a 13-2 record at Carnesecca so far this season. Star RS/S Erin Jones has put together an outstanding season for the Red Storm, winning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week award in consecutive weeks. Jones has notched four straight triple-doubles, tying a BIG EAST record, averaging 3.88 kills per set with 37 assists, and 29 digs on .302 hitting last week. St. John's has been anchored defensively by Rashanny Solano Smith, who averaged 4.50 digs per set last week to make the BIG EAST Honor roll last week. The Johnnies have gone 6-2 since the last time these teams matched up in Storrs that saw the Huskies eke out a five-set win. St. John's is currently riding in on a four match winning streak, entering Friday one game behind UConn in the standings.
Villanova Snapshot (15-12, 8-8 BIG EAST)
Nova finishes their regular season with two matches at home, facing Providence on Friday night before greeting the Huskies in their season finale. The Wildcats are in a must-win scenario to get in the conference tournament, coming into the weekend at 8-8 in conference play, tied with Xavier for the sixth and final spot. Villanova is coming off a sweep win at Butler last weekend, led by OH Abby Harrell's match-high 13 kills. Harrell, last year's BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, leads the 'Cats with 3.15 k/set in conference play. In their first matchup, UConn defeated Villanova at the UConn Volleyball Center in four sets. Four Huskies notched double-digit kills, with Hanna Tylska leading the way with 16. Doga Kutlu had 32 digs in the win for the Huskies, the most by any player in a single BIG EAST match this season.
What's At Stake: UConn has clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament in Omaha next week. The Huskies can finish as high as third in the conference. With two wins this weekend, the Huskies would match their 24-win season total they achieved in 2021.
