Volleyball Bounces Back, Sweeping Georgetown on Friday Night
STORRS, Conn.- UConn volleyball returned home Friday night, continuing their BIG EAST slate against the Georgetown Hoyas at the UConn Volleyball Center.
Audrey Rome and Emma Werkmeister got involved early on both ends, aided by a Grace Maria ace and a Taylor Pannell kill to get the hosts started with a 6-4 lead. Georgetown and UConn traded errors early in the first set, Huskies successfully challenging a call that got Hanna Tylska on the board with her first kill of the night. Loren Winn and Werkmeister broke up a short run from the Hoyas to give UConn a slim one-point lead going into the media timeout at 15-14. The Huskies rattled off 4 points in a row to build their lead to 18-14 and generate a Georgetown timeout. UConn miscues and strong Georgetown play got the Hoyas back into the set, tying the score at 21-all. A booming kill from Werkmeister and two kills from Pannell got the Huskies on the brink of taking the first set, going on a 3-0 run to get the UConn faithful on their feet. Pannell's fourth kill of the set lifted the Huskies to a first-set win, 25-22.
Service errors from both squads kicked off a competitive set that saw Georgetown take an early advantage 6-5. Winn contributed on both sides, with a block and a kill to switch momentum in UConn's favor, as the Huskies went up 11-9. The Hoyas answered right back with a balanced attack to snag a brief lead before a booming Rome kill got the score back at 17-all. It was Georgetown's defense, with two late second set blocks that forced UConn into a timeout, trailing 20-18. True to their 'relentless' mantra, the Huskies rattled off 6 of the 7 final set points, emphasized by aces from Werkmeister and McKenna Brand to take a commanding two-set lead, taking the second frame 25-23.
Following an early 4-4 third set tie, the Huskies stepped on the gas, as Pannell and Werkmeister poured in kills, with Werkmeister's getting her to 200 on the season. A Brenna Wyman ace built a 10-5 UConn lead to force Georgetown to talk things over. The Hoyas got back into the set with a 3-0 run, but another kill from Rome and a Hoya error ran the Husky lead back up to 16-10. UConn would not look back in this third set, with two more kills each from Werkmeister and Pannell sealing the first conference win of the season for the Huskies, as they swept Georgetown on Friday night.
Pannell, Werkmeister, and Tylska all notched double-digit kills to lead UConn. Giselle Williams and Dionna Mitchell led the Hoyas with 9 kills each.
