Volleyball Bounces Back, Defeating Providence Wednesday Night

PROVIDENCE, RI.-  UConn volleyball concluded their three match road trip Wednesday night against Providence College. The Huskies came into the match looking to rebound from suffering consecutive defeats against Xavier and DePaul.

UConn took advantage of a handful of PC errors to jump in front at 5-3. Hanna Tylska registered consecutive kills early in the first, helping the Huskies go on a 4-0 run to go ahead 11-6. Providence battled all the way back, capitalizing on UConn miscues to snag the lead midway through the first set at 13-12. Multiple kills from Friar MB Lyric Berry forced another UConn timeout, with the hosts up 19-15 in the first. Two consecutive terminations from Taylor Pannell got the Huskies within two, but Providence responded with a 4-0 run, finishing the first set on a combined block from Shea Dupuis and Kayla Grant to take it, 25-19.

Boosted by the end of the first, the Friars came out firing in the second, rattling off six of the first seven points to get UConn to talk things over. PC kill leader Shaliyah Rhoden got on the board as a part of this run. Kills from Tylska and Loren Winn closed the large Providence lead that got all the way up to 13-7, cutting the hosts' lead to 13-10 with a kill apiece. The combination of a Grace Maria ace and multiple Friar errors started another UConn to knot up the score at 15-15. The sides continued to trade points to ratchet the intensity up at 21-all. Pannell's two consecutive aces and a Tylska kill got the Huskies back into the match, taking the second set 25-23.

Momentum carried over in the opening moments of the third set, as a balanced attack from Tylska, Winn, and Audrey Rome got UConn in front 6-3. McKenna Brand notched an ace, and Pannell continued to lead the charge for the squad, as the Huskies charged ahead in the set 12-8. UConn got on the verge of taking the set, with the offensive leaders Pannell and Tylska chipping in kills to keep the UConn five-point advantage. PC got UConn to burn a timeout after a late set run, but the Huskies stayed composed and took the third set to lead the match two sets to one.

Neither team was able to go up decisively in the fourth, in a seesaw set that had the score tied at 7 early on. It was the relentless Huskies that went on the first extended run of the frame, stringing together four points in a row to get PC to call timeout, leading 12-9. The Friars would not go down without a fight, battling back to reclaim the lead 16-15 to generate a UConn timeout. After Providence got the score all the way back to 21-all, UConn landed the final blow, with three different Huskies registering kills, and a Kutlu ace winning the match for the visitors to snap their two-game losing skid.

Hitting at .343, Pannell led the way with 17 kills for the Huskies, with 6 blocks and 3 aces as well. For the Friars, Rhoden had the most kills with 16 in the defeat.
