Women's Track & Field Wins Fourth-Straight BIG EAST Championship
BIG EAST Championships Final Results
VILLANOVA, Pa. - The University of Connecticut women's track & field team won the BIG EAST Championship, indoor and outdoor, for the fourth-straight time after wrapping up a three-day event on Saturday night.
With the win, this also makes it the second-consecutive conference championship victory in the overall 2023 season for UConn.
In the team score, the Huskies put up a solid first-place total of 214.5 points which would be the fourth-most points scored in BIG EAST Championships history with most points ever scored from UConn. Following that score, St. John's finished in second with 132.5 points and Depaul finished in third scoring 123.5 points. For UConn, there were six event champions and 14 medal winners including six of those being personal bests.
Highlighting the weekend was Emily Lavarnway in the heptathlon as she took gold, scoring a personal best of 5,572 points. Also, Lavarnway would break personal records in the heptathlon shot put with a 12.87m result, the heptathlon javelin throw with a 36.04m result, and the heptathlon 800 meters with a time of 2:15.13.
Also in the field, Natalia Surdej won gold in the hammer throw with a 55.39m result. Brynn Madonna earned a gold medal in the javelin throw with a personal best mark of 47.77m and Caitlin Dumouchel earned bronze with a mark of 43.31m.
Jasmine Barrow won gold in the triple jump with a 12.76m result. Barrow also would tie her personal best in the long jump jumping 6.02m and earning bronze. Additionally in the long jump, A'liyah Thomas earned a silver medal with a 6.21m result.
On the track, Jailya Ash broke her personal record by one millisecond in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries and then won gold in the final with a time of 13.58 seconds. Gabby Davis won gold in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.63. Also in the 400-meter hurdle Jessica Starr broke her personal record claiming the silver medal with a time of 1:00.80.
Lastly, the 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Mia Dansby, Brianna Davis, Danielle Phillip, and Jailya Ash broke the season best record winning gold and running a 45.96 time.
"It was just a tremendous team effort from start to finish," Director of Track & Field Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "In every event, every competitor gave their all in a very impressive, competitive environment. I was impressed with the competition from Depaul on the men's side challenging and on the women's side from St. John's. UConn track & field is a powerhouse in the BIG EAST, and I was really proud of this team with outstanding performances from top to end."
The Huskies look ahead to the NCAA East Qualifier Round starting on Wednesday, May 24 through Saturday, May 26 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Women:
Emily Lavarnway in the Heptathlon: PR in shot put with 12.87m, PR in the Javelin Throw with a result of 36.04m, and a PR in the 800 meters with a time of 2:15.13. Finished with gold in the Heptathlon totaling a huge personal record of 5,572 total points
PR for Alyssa Elliott in the Heptathlon (4,787 pts, 4th); PR in Heptathlon Javelin Throw (30.62m) Katelyn Reid (4,468, 5th); PR in Heptathlon Javelin Throw (34.19m)
Emily Alty in the Discus Throw earned silver (45.53m) and a PR in the Hammer Throw with a throw of 50.21m placing fourth
In the 10,000 meters, Randi Burr finished in 36:33.39, Caroline Towle finished in 36:45.97, and Caroline Webb in 36:54.32 which all scored in the event
Julia Moraitis placed fifth in the Javelin with 41.39m
Tied PR for Sofia Wittmann took silver in the Pole Vault with 3.87m result, Rachel Mason finished fourth with 3.62m
PR for Mia Dansby in the 200m First Round (24.67 seconds), She placed seventh in the finals (24.81)
PR for Chloe Thomas in 1500m took bronze (4:17.95)
Felicia Quainoo with 14.57 seconds taking fifth in the 100-meter hurdles
Brianna Davis in the 100 meters (12.09 seconds, 4th)
Patricia Mroczkowski in the High Jump took silver (1.75m), Emily Lavarnway (1.64m, 4th)
