Huskies Fall Short to Georgetown on the Road
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team fell short in a close battle against Georgetown on the road by a score of 4-3 Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies are now 10-7 overall and 2-3 in BIG EAST action. UConn began the match with strong doubles performances, taking the doubles point with wins at the first and second doubles positions. Then with tough three-set matches in singles play at the first and fourth singles spots, Georgetown would take four of the six singles points capitalizing through UConn's tough effort.
"This was a really tough Big East match today," said tennis head coach Glenn Marshall. "Unfortunately, we came up just short in our singles matches in the end. We started the day with another very solid doubles performance to take the doubles point. Maria got off to a great start in singles and won in straight sets. We lost at 3 and 6, but Cam came through in straight sets at number 5 singles to go up 3-2 in the match. It came down to 3 set matches for Olivia and Caroline, and we just came up a little short down the stretch. Georgetown played really tough third sets. This loss stings for everyone as a group, but we need to turn it right around and use it for motivation in our match with Villanova tomorrow."
With another 2-0 day for junior Maria Constantinou, Constantinou now extends her singles record to 10-5 at second singles and doubles record of 8-4 with teammate Olivia Wright at first doubles.
