No. 4 Huskies Advance to BIG EAST Semifinals
CAYCE, S.C. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team shutout No. 5 Creighton, 4-0, in the BIG EAST quarterfinals round in Cayce at the Tennis and Fitness Center Saturday afternoon. This marks the first time the Huskies secure a spot in the BIG EAST semifinals round in program history and the first time defeating Creighton.
The No. 4 Huskies will move on to face the top-seeded Xavier Musketeers tomorrow, April 21 at 1 p.m. ET in S.C.
"This was truly a great win for our program today," said tennis head coach Glenn Marshall. "Not only the first time we beat Creighton, but first time we've advanced to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tennis Championships. The kids played outstanding doubles again right from the start. The one and two teams lead the way with, focused effort and lead us to victory and the doubles point. Moving into singles with the momentum, all of our kids had good starts in their singles matches on their minds. It started with some close first sets, but we were able to win the majority of the first sets And Cameron led us to our second point of the match with a straight win at number four. Olivia was close in the first set and ended up winning a great match at number one to get us to 3-0. That left three kids in the third set, and Maria, sealed the victory with the fourth point. Overall a great day for our program and super pleased with how the kids performed today."
