Huskies Top Butler for Milestone Win

MANCHESTER, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team scored their seventh-straight victory on Sunday morning, beating visiting Butler Univeristy 6-1, at the Magic Lincer Tennis Club. The win delivers Head Coach and Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall, in his 33rd season at the helm, his 500th career victory, all with the Huskies.

"This was a very good win against a tough team from Butler," stated Marshall. "Overall, a solid win for our program, and it keeps us undefeated in conference play."

UConn ran their record to 7-0 against BIG EAST foes this spring and still have match-ups with DePaul, Villanova and St. John's before post season play begins.

"Our doubles got off to a good start with Olivia and Vicky coming through with the win at #1 doubles.  We followed it up with a close win at number 2 with Izzy and Chloe.  With the doubles point secured, we felt confident going into singles and got off to good starts on almost every court."

Olivia Wright (Glen Allen, VA) and Victoria Matos (Coram, NY) improved to 4-0 playing together in the No. 1 doubles spot, beating Chase Metcalf and Brooke Arington, 6-1. The duo of Isabel Petri Bere (Lund, Sweden) and Chloe Lomans (Netherlands) sealed the point with a 6-3 win at No.3

Wright notched her sixth-straight win at No.1 singles, beating Mecalf 6-3 and 6-2. Matos followed suit at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Katie Beavin, improving to 16-9 on the season. Cameron Didion (Orlando, FL) kept her win streak alive, going to eight-straight with a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 3 over Arington.  She improves to 14-3 and 9-1 in dual match play.

UConn's Lomans and Isabella Asenov (Vancouver, B.C.) both earned three-set wins to deliver the UConn victory.  Lomans won her team-leading 18th match and fifth-straight, posting a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-5 win over Lauren Cook at No. 5.  Asenov battled Emma Beavin, winning the first 7-6 (3), dropping the second 3-6 and answering in the tie-break set with a 10-7 win.

"Olivia played great and got the win in straight sets.  Next we had good wins with Vicky and Cam at #3 and 4 singles.  They each had challenges in their second sets but stayed focused and tough, each winning in straight sets.  Finally at #5 and 6 singles, I was very proud of Chloe and Bella, who each faced adversity and overcame that in their three set wins."

The Huskies return to action next weekend, hosting DePaul on Friday, April 4 and Villanova, April 6, on the UConn Tennis Courts on the Storrs campus.
