Softball Opens the BIG EAST Tournament against Creighton
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The number two seed UConn Huskies open the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament against the number three seed Creighton Bluejays on Thursday, May 9 at 4:00pm.
UConn comes into the tournament on a three game winning streak, closing out the regular season with a sweep at Georgetown. The Huskies finished the regular season at 16-8 in conference play with series wins over Butler, Providence, Creighton, and Seton Hall including two sweeps against DePaul and Georgetown.
UConn's offense has fire power up and down the lineup, ranking second in the conference in home runs (38), third in doubles (69), runs scored (217), and slugging percentage (.411). The Huskies are led by the BIG EAST Player of the Year in Lexi Hastings. The junior outfielder has been a spark plug at the top of the UConn lineup all season long, leading the team in hits (66), runs (45), batting average (.398), and stolen bases (30).
The Huskies pitching staff has been tremendous all season long, led by three seniors in Meghan O'Neil, Payton Kinney, and Hallie Siems. The staff has given up the least amount of runs in the conference (168) while holding opposing batters to a collective .223 batting average this season. UConn ranks second in era (2.86), and strike outs (373). Kinney has led the staff through conference play this season with an 8-2 record, holding a 2.04 era with 73 strikeouts across 61.2 innings pitched. The senior right hander was selected to the BIG EAST All-Conference Second Team, the second time in her career she has been named to an All-Conference team.
Creighton is coming off a win in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament over the Butler Bulldogs on Wednesday night. These two teams met back in mid-April during the regular season in Storrs where the Huskies took two out of three games from the Bluejays.
First pitch is set for 4:00pm and will be streamed on FloSoftball.
