Softball secures series win at Seton Hall behind stellar pitching
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The UConn softball team defeated the Seton Hall Pirates, 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field. The Huskies scored two runs in the seventh inning to break up a scoreless pitcher's duel.
Hallie Siems made her 24th start of the season for the Huskies. The senior from Arkansas was dominant in the circle tossing 4.1 scoreless innings only surrendering one hit, adding one strikeout. Siems started out the game strong, retiring all nine batters the first time through the order.
The Huskies threatened to score in each of the first three innings, leaving a combined five runners on base. UConn left seven runners on the basepaths in the game.
Seton Hall threatened to score in the fifth inning as they loaded the bases with only one out.
Payton Kinney came on in relief for Siems in the middle of the fifth, getting the Huskies out of the bases loaded jam unscathed. She struck out both hitters she faced in the inning, keeping the game scoreless. Kinney finished the game in the circle going 2.2 innings keeping the Pirates hitless, adding three strikeouts.
UConn broke through in the seventh inning, scoring two runs with two outs on two clutch hits. Rosie Garcia delivered the game winning hit with a single to left field, scoring Lexi Hastings from second base. Jana Sanden followed Garcia with another single to left field, scoring Lauren Benson from third base.
