UConn to Celebrate Softball's 50th Anniversary

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn Softball program will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the program in the upcoming 2025 season. Since the program's inception in 1975, the Huskies are 1,204-937-6 all-time, producing 16 conference championships, eight NCAA Tournament appearances, and eight All-Americans. 

UConn will welcome back program alumnae the weekend of the Georgetown series starting on April 25 to commemorate 50 years of UConn Softball. More information will be released in the coming weeks. 

Commemorative merchandise celebrating the 50th anniversary will go on sale during the season.

Additional promotions, giveaways, and announcements will be released throughout the season.

Through the Decades

1975 - 1989

  • Ruth Mead became the first head coach in program history in 1975.
  • In 1984, former player Karen Mullins (1977-79) was named the second head coach in program history. In her first season, Mullins led the Huskies to a 20-0 start to the season, finishing 22-2 and going a perfect 16-0 at home. That team only gave up 20 runs all season which still stands as a program record to this day. 
  • In 1985, the Huskies won the ECAC Division I Championship, the first conference title in program history. UConn went 34-7 after starting the season at 19-2.  
  • In 1989, the Huskies made their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance, making it all the way to the NCAA Regional Championship game. Coach Mullins was named NFCA Northeast Coach of the Year.

1990 – 1999

  • In 1990, the Huskies won the BIG EAST Tournament Championship for the first time in program history, sparking a championship dynasty run through the 1990's. UConn earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, hosting the first ever regional in Storrs. Coach Mullins was named NFCA Northeast Coach of the Year for a second consecutive year, coaching the first ever NFCA All-Americans in program history in Vicki Bartolucci (1987-90), and Sue Rybczyk (1987-90). 
  • UConn went on to win the next three straight BIG EAST Tournament Championships from 1991-1993, making five consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. 
  • In a five-year span from 1989-1993, UConn was one of only nine Division I softball programs to qualify for each of the five NCAA Tournaments. 
  • In 1993, the Huskies made their first and only appearance in the College World Series, boasting a 45-14 record, the most wins in a season in program history. Coach Mullins was named NFCA Northeast Coach of the Year for the third time and BIG EAST Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year, coaching three players the NFCA All-America status in Pat Conlan (1990-93), Janna Venice (1990-93), and Andrea D'Innocenzo (1992-95).
  • UConn won back to back BIG EAST Tournament Championships from 1995-1996. 
  • In the 1990's, UConn produced nine NFCA All-Americans, three BIG EAST Player of the Years, four BIG EAST Pitcher of the Years, three BIG EAST Rookie of the Years, and 26 All-Conference players.

2000 - 2009

  • The Huskies put together back to back 35+ win seasons to kick off the 2000's. In the 2000 season, UConn went 37-17 and in 2001 went 36-23, reaching the 35 win mark for the seventh time in program history. 
  • In 2001, the Huskies won the program's seventh BIG EAST Tournament Championship, earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time. The team tied a program record winning 22 straight games, a feat only done twice in program history (1992).  
  • Coach Mullins earned her 600th career win on March 2, 2003, defeating Louisiana Tech, 3-0. 
  • Micah Truax won back to back BIG EAST Player of the Year honors from 2007-2008, becoming just the second player in program history to win the prestigious award in consecutive years. Janna Venice was the only other player to do so (1992-93).
  • Coach Mullins earned her 700th career win at UConn on April 21, 2007, defeating Villanova 9-8. 

2010 - Present 

  • Coach Mullins became just the 43rd head coach in NCAA history to reach the milestone of 800 career wins on March 12, 2011. The Huskies beat Colorado State, 17-4. 
  • In 2013, UConn joined the American Athletic Conference (AAC), playing softball in a conference other than the BIG EAST for the very first time. 
  • In 2014, Coach Mullins retired after serving as Head Softball Coach for 31 years. Mullins concluded her UConn career with an overall record of 862-636-5, and including two years at Nichols College in 1980 and '81, her overall career record is 872-636-5. She is just one of less than 60 coaches in the history of college softball to post 800 or more career wins.
  • Jen McIntyre was named the third Head Softball Coach in program history on July 7, 2014. 
  • Laura Valentino was appointed Head Softball Coach on July 3, 2019, becoming the fourth head coach in program history.
  • UConn returns to the BIG EAST in July of 2020.
  • In the first full season back in the BIG EAST the Huskies went to the BIG EAST Championship game, a feat not done since 2001. 
  • In 2022, the Huskies were BIG EAST Regular Season Champions for the first time since 1997.  
  • In 2023, UConn won back to back BIG EAST Regular Season titles. The last time the Huskies won back to back regular season titles was the 1996 & 1997 seasons.
