Softball tops Boston College
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team defeated the Boston College Eagles, 5-4 on Tuesday night at Burrill Family Field.
Hallie Siems made her 25th start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. She went 4.1 innings giving up four runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
Boston College opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with one run, but Siems was able to limit the damage, stranding a runner in scoring position.
UConn responded right away in the bottom of the first inning with two runs to take the lead. Rosie Garcia opened the scoring for the Huskies with a foul out to deep left field, allowing Lauren Benson to tag up and score from third base. Jana Sanden followed Garcia with a single down the left field line, scoring Grace Jenkins from third base, making it 2-1 Huskies.
Boston College tied the game at two in the third inning off a solo home run from Nicole Giery.
The Eagles took a two run lead in the top of the fifth inning, putting BC in front 4-2. Payton Kinney came on in relief for Siems in the inning, limiting the Eagles to only two runs. Kinney finished out the game in the circle in dominant fashion, keeping BC hitless in her 2.2 innings pitched, adding a pair of strikeouts.
UConn again responded right away with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking the lead for good. Benson delivered a game tying two run double to left center field, scoring Haley Coupal and Lexi Hastings, knotting the game at four. The Huskies capitalized on a Boston College error as Garcia hit a ground ball that was mishandled by the Eagles third baseman, allowing Benson to score from second base.
Kinney kept Boston College's offense quiet, retiring eight of the nine batters she faced, closing out the Huskies 26th win of the season.
