Softball completes series sweep at Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The UConn softball team completed the series sweep of Georgetown on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Hoyas 6-5. 

Payton Kinney made her 17th start of the season for the Huskies picking up her 11th win on the year. Kinney was dominant as she only gave up one run on two hits with six strikeouts in 4.2 innings. 

UConn's offense set the tone putting up a crooked number in the second inning, scoring five runs on four hits. Giuliana Abruscato started the rally with a double off the wall in left center field, scoring Haley Coupal all the way from first base. After stealing third base, Abruscato came home on a pass ball, doubling UConn's lead. Lexi Hastings continued the rally with a single to right field, scoring Savannah Ring from second base. Jana Sanden capped off the inning with a two run single to right field scoring Hastings and Rosie Garcia

Georgetown got a run back in the bottom of the second inning, making it 5-1 Huskies. 

UConn added to their lead in the fourth inning off the bat of Grace Jenkins as the sophomore hit her sixth home run of the year, making it 6-1. 

Hope Jenkins came on in relief for Kinney in the fifth inning. She tossed 2.0 scoreless innings only giving up two hits adding a strikeout. 

Meghan O'Neil came on in relief for Jenkins in the seventh inning. O'Neil faced only five batters in the inning, before being pulled for Kinney. 

Georgetown rallied late in the seventh inning as they scored four runs with three runs coming off a home run, making it a one run ball game. Kinney was able to get the final two outs with the tying run in scoring position, giving UConn their 30th win of the season. The Huskies have now had three 30 win seasons in a row under head coach Laura Valentino. The last time UConn had three consecutive 30 win seasons was in the mid 1990's ('95, '96, '97). 

Up Next:

UConn will head to the BIG EAST Tournament in Providence, Rhode Island next week. The Huskies will have to wait for other results around the conference to determine their seeding in the tournament.
