Softball Advances to BIG EAST Tournament Semifinal

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UConn softball team won their opening game in the BIG EAST Tournament on Thursday afternoon, defeating the Creighton Bluejays, 3-1.

Payton Kinney got the nod in game one of the BIG EAST Tournament. Kinney was sensational, tossing 6.0 innings for the Huskies giving up only one run on six hits with nine strikeouts, keeping a potent Creighton lineup at bay.

Creighton took the game's first lead in the second inning on a bloop single to left field, putting the Huskies down 1-0.

UConn responded right away in the third inning off the bat of Grace Jenkins as the sophomore hit a two run home run to dead center field, putting the Huskies in front, 2-1.

The Huskies added a key insurance run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Kaitlyn Kibling, scoring Jana Sanden from third base.

Meghan O'Neil came on to close out the win for the Huskies in the seventh inning, picking up her seventh save of the season.
