STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team lost to the St. John's Red Storm, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. With today's result, the Huskies and Johnnies are tied for first place in the conference standings with one game to decide the BIG EAST regular season championship, tomorrow, Sunday May 4 at 1:00pm.
Graduate student Payton Kinney made her 22nd start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. Kinney was dominant through the first three innings, retiring nine straight Red Storm hitters, nine up, nine down. She went 3.1 innings giving up three runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
The game was a pitcher's duel through the first three innings as UConn accounted for the only hits of the game with two through three.
St. John's broke through in the top of the fourth inning, scoring three runs on four hits, giving the Red Storm a 3-0 lead.
Redshirt-sophomore Sydnee Koosh came on in relief for Kinney in the middle of the fourth inning, making her 24th appearance of the season. Koosh went 3.2 innings giving up one run on four hits, adding a pair of strikeouts.
St. John's added a key insurance run in the top of the sixth inning, making it 4-0.
UConn battled back in the bottom of the sixth inning, making it a one-run game with one swing off the bat of freshman infielder Cat Petteys. The rookie shortstop blasted a three-run home run into the left field bullpen, her 11th of the season, trimming into the Johnnies lead, 4-3.
UConn continued to fight in search of the game tying run, but could not find a way past St. John's starter, Loreley Francia who went the distance in the circle for the Johnnies.
News and Notes
- Cat Petteys hit her 11th home run of the season. Petteys recorded her 18th multi-hit and 9th multi-RBI games in her rookie campaign and now has 41 RBI this season.
- Grace Jenkins extended her on base streak to 26 straight games
- UConn was limited to just four hits. This is just the second time this season where the Huskies have had less than six hits in consecutive games. .
- Lexi Hastings' on base streak was snapped at 20 straight games.
- Kaitlyn Breslin's on base streak was snapped at 14 straight games.
- UConn turned their 14th double play this season.
