Softball tops UMASS

AMHERST, Mass. – The UConn softball team defeated the UMASS Minutewomen, 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Sortino Field.

Hallie Siems made her 22nd start of the season for the Huskies, picking up her 11th win on the year. She went 6.0 innings giving up three runs on only three hits with eight strikeouts. 

UMASS jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning off a solo home run. 

UConn took the lead for good in the fourth inning off the bat of Giuliana Abruscato. The senior delivered a two out, two run single to left field, scoring Lauren Benson and Haley Coupal

The Huskies extended the lead in the sixth inning as Kaitlyn Kibling hit a two run home run to right field, her second of the year, making it 4-1. 

UMASS trimmed into the lead with a two run home run in the sixth inning to make it 4-3. 

UConn added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, as Benson came home on a throwing error by the UMASS pitcher, allowing the senior to score from second base. 

Meghan O'Neil came on to close out the win for the Huskies. She tossed a scoreless inning with a pair of strikeouts, picking up her fifth save of the season.

UConn returns to BIG EAST action this weekend, as they travel to South Orange, New Jersey for a three game series with the Seton Hall Pirates. Game one is set for Friday, April 19 at 2:00pm.
