Huskies Win 9th Straight Game, Sweep Georgetown

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team defeated the Georgetown Hoyas, 12-3 in five innings on Sunday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. The win gives UConn their third conference sweep this season, moving the Huskies to 17-4 in BIG EAST play and 31-14 overall this season. 

Graduate student Payton Kinney made her 20th start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. Kinney tossed 4.0 scoreless innings, only giving up just a pair of hits, picking up her 11th win of the season. 

UConn jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off the bat of senior infielder Rosie Garcia as she singled to center field, scoring Lexi Hastings from third base. 

UConn extended the lead in the second inning to 3-0 on a pair of hits. Junior infielder Haley Coupal continued her hot streak at the plate with a single to right field, scoring Cat Petteys from second base, doubling the Huskies lead. Coupal now has an RBI in five straight games. Later in the inning, Hastings delivered a two-out triple, scoring Coupal from second base. 

UConn broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring nine runs on five hits, giving the Huskies a commanding 12-0 lead. Junior infielder Kaiea Higa got the rally started with a single to right field, scoring Hastings from second base. A batter later, UConn loaded the bases for sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Breslin who delivered a single to right center field, scoring Grace Jenkins and Higa. Coupal kept the inning going, working a bases loaded walk, scoring Garcia from third base. Junior Hope Jenkins followed Coupal reaching on a fielder's choice, allowing pinch runner Rayah Snyder to score from third base. 

Later in the inning, UConn once again loaded the bases for the top of the order. Hastings delivered a two-out double to center field, scoring Petteys and Hope Jenkins. Grace Jenkins drove in the Huskies 9th run of the inning with a single down the right field line, scoring Kaityln Kibling and Hastings. 

Hope Jenkins came on in relief for Kinney in the fifth inning, making her 29th appearance of the season in the circle for the Huskies. Jenkins locked down the win, finishing with a pair of strikeouts.

Georgetown scored three runs in the fifth inning, making it 12-3.

  • Lexi Hastings recorded her team leading 18th multi-hit game and 8th multi-RBI game this season. Hastings has reached base safely in 18 consecutive games. 
  • Haley Coupal has recorded back to back multi-RBI games, giving her three this season. Coupal has an RBI in five straight games. 
  • Rosie Garcia recorded her 14th multi-hit game this season. Garcia has nine hits in her last seven games and has reached base safely in ten straight games. 
  • Grace Jenkins recorded her team leading 16th multi-RBI game and now has 61 RBI this season. She has reached base safely in 23 straight games. 
  • Kaitlyn Breslin recorded her 50th RBI this season, tallying her 13th multi-RBI game. Breslin has RBI in eight of her last nine games. 
  • This is the Huskies 12th game this season scoring 10+ runs. 
  • Lexi Hastings hit the Huskies 9th triple this season. 
  • UConn drew seven walks.
