Softball signs four to the class of 2028
STORRS, Conn. – UConn softball head coach Laura Valentino has announced the addition of four student-athletes to the class of 2028 on Wednesday afternoon.
The class consists of Isabela Cruz (OF), Caitlyn Petteys (INF), Heidi Barber (Catcher), and Amber Bretton (Pitcher/Utility).
"We are so excited to officially welcome these four student-athletes and their families to the UConn Softball program," said Valentino. "The class of 2028 possesses mental toughness, and they all model a resilient attitude in all areas of their lives. I am confident Bella, Cat, Heidi, and Amber will have a lasting impression on our program."
Isabela Cruz comes to UConn after lettering four seasons for head coach Mike Massa at St. Anthony's in South Huntington, New York. The two-time team captain was a first team All-New York State player her sophomore and junior year. She was also named first team All-Long Island and All-Conference in those years as well. Her team has won back to back state championships in 2022 and 2023 with Cruz being named tournament MVP in 2022. Cruz, also hold letters in winter track and volleyball.
"Bella is a spark on and off the field," said Valentino. "Her aggressive style of play will be a key component in her success as a Husky. We are looking forward to coaching Bella's infectious attitude and love for the game."
Caitlyn Petteys arrives in Storrs after lettering three seasons for head coach Vickie Sax at Vestal Senior High School in Vestal, New York. Petteys, a three-time team captain was named to the Class A All-State first team a season ago. She is a two-time STAC All-Conference first team All-Star. Her team won the 2022 NYSPHSAA Class A Regional Championship and 2022 Section 4 Class A Sectional Championship. Petteys has also earned a letter in field hockey at Vestal Senior High School.
"Cat's competitiveness sets her apart and shows in her drive to be the best," said Valentino. "We are confident Cat's athleticism and power will impact UConn Softball on both offense and defense and we cannot wait to have her contribute to future championships."
Heidi Barber joins the Huskies from Lino Lakes, Minnesota where she attends White Bear Lake High School. Barber is a first team All-State player, two-time All-Conference, and three-time All-Section. She is a two-time Section champion, one-time conference champion, and was named offensive player of the year. In her three seasons she holds a .447 batting average, with 25 doubles and has caught 34 runners stealing from the catcher position. Barber also holds letters in basketball and football.
"Heidi's game sense and confidence behind the plate will be an immediate impact to our battery," said Valentino. "We love Heidi's work ethic, and we believe her competitive mindset will propel her career as a Husky."
Amber Bretton becomes a Husky after lettering three seasons under head coach Tim Spear at Gorham High School in Gorham, Maine. Bretton has been a three year starter on varsity, earning first team All-Conference honors in those three seasons. She has been named to the preseason top players to watch in Maine two times, while earning All-State honors in 2023. She holds a .526 career batting average and has contributed 20 home runs in her 2023 travel ball season. Bretton has also earned letters in Volleyball as she is a three-time All-Conference selection.
"Amber is an exciting two dimensional player both on the mound and at the plate," said Valentino. "We are confident Amber's strong character and coachability will be key components leading Amber to achieve amazing things in a UConn uniform."
