WSOC Plays NCAA First Round at Rutgers on Saturday Night
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The UConn women's soccer team (13-4-4) returns to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016 and will play No. 8 seeded Rutgers on Saturday, November 16 at 5 p.m. at Yurcak Field in the NCAA First Round. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
The Huskies return to the field of 64 is the program's 32nd NCAA Tournament, ranking fifth most all-time. The NCAA Tournament is the first for seventh year head coach Margaret Rodriguez. The former UConn star played in four NCAA Tournaments including a run to the NCAA Final in 1997.
UConn earned the automatic bid to the NCAA's with a 2-1 thriller in double overtime against Xavier in the BIG EAST Final on Sunday. It is the first BIG EAST Tournament crown for the Huskies since 2004 (UConn won three American Athletic Conference Tournaments in 2014, '15 and '16 before rejoining BIG EAST in 2020).
The Huskies are riding a five-match win streak that has featured three shutouts and just two goals allowed by the UConn defense.
First Team All-BIG EAST and BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Offensive Player Chioma Okafor leads the Huskies with 12 goals and 28 points. Senior Maddie Fried is second on the team with five goals on the year while BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Defensive Player Lucy Cappadona scored two goals in the BIG EAST Tournament and has posted a career-high four goals out of the back for UConn.
Senior Sophie McCarthy is tied for the team lead with four helpers this season.
Graduate student Kaitllyn Mahoney enters Saturday's match second in UConn history with 27 shutouts in goal.
