WSOC Wins Third-Straight, Defeat Cal St. Fullerton, 2-0
STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team (3-1-1) won its third-straight game, 2-0, against Cal State Fullerton on Thursday night at Morrone Stadium.
The victory is the third-straight shutout victory for the Huskies too, the first time the program has captured that feat since securing three-straight shutout victories in the spring of 2021.
Graduate student Kaitlyn Mahoney registered her 22nd career shutout with four saves on the night, tying Stephanie Labbe (2005-08) for fifth all-time in program history.
UConn jumped out to a quick lead with senior Maddie Fried scoring 2:12 minutes into the match. Junior Chioma Okafor scooped up the ball at the edge of the Huskies own box and bobbed and weaved all the way across midfield before sliding a through ball ahead to the Monroe, Conn. native who scored on a tough angle try. It is the first goal at UConn for Fried.
It was the quickest the Huskies had scored in a game since back to the BIG EAST Quarterfinals last season with Jessica Mazo scoring 2:02 into the match.
The Huskies outshot the Titans 7-2 in the first half and looked like they would settle for a one-goal lead heading into halftime. However, sophomore Lexi Taylor came off the bench and made an impact in the late stages.
The North Stonington, Conn. native saved a ball from going out of bounds and eventually sent a centering ball into the box, after the ball was batted up into the air, freshman Naia Ocio kept it alive and fed an off balance pass to Taylor Jenkins. Jenkins hammered it home with 15 second left on the clock to make it 2-0 Huskies. For the freshman, it was her first career collegiate goal.
In the second half, the Huskies were unable to create as many opportunities but the defense stood strong along with Mahoney making a few big time saves to seal the victory.
Up next, the Huskies remain home for a Sunday, Sept. 8 match against Rhode Island at 1 p.m.
