WSOC Draws at No. 21 Xavier
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The UConn women's soccer team (6-1-3, 0-0-2 BIG EAST) earned a quality 1-1 draw at No. 21 Xavier (8-1-2, 1-0-1 BIG EAST) on a rainy Thursday evening at Corcoran Field.
The Huskies had the Musketeers back on their heels for a large chunk of the match, with UConn having the majority of the quality chances.
Junior Lina Dantes had the first quality chance in the 12th minute by turning the corner and having a tough angle shot denied by the Xavier keeper and then followed up by trying to loft one into the back of the net that landed on top of goal.
The Huskies held a 7-4 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes.
UConn continued to apply pressure in the second half with senior Anna Carson playing a great long ball ahead to Chioma Okafor. Okafor ran down the pass, settled it and fired a shot that was saved.
Three minutes later, Okafor set up Maddie Fried with a chance in the box. Fried tried firing a one-timer but was taken down in the box before being able to pull the trigger.
The Musketeers broke through on the scoreboard in the 66th minute with a misplay by the UConn keeper, leading to the Xavier tally.
UConn responded well, continuing to press forward and seek an equalizer. With 23 minutes to go, Abbey Jones nearly headed home an equalizer on a perfect free kick by Anna Carson that found Jones on the far post but her attempt was denied.
The score remained the same until the 83rd minute. The Huskies earned a penalty kick on a tackle on sophomore Anaya Johnson inside the box.
For the fourth time this season, Okafor buried for shot from the spot to even the score at one. It is the 8th goal of the year for the UConn striker.
Both teams had corner kick opportunities at the tail end of the second half but settled for the 1-1 draw.
UConn returns home to face off against Georgetown on Sunday, September 29 at 1 p.m.
