WSOC Back in Win Column Against Providence

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team (7-2-3, 1-1-2 BIG EAST) notched its first BIG EAST victory of the season with a 1-0 victory against Providence on Thursday evening at Morrone Stadium.

The Huskies outshot the Friars 10-4 including a 7-0 advantage on shots on goal.

Junior Chioma Okafor scored for the fourth-straight game with a tally in the 28th minute on a service into the box by Laci Lewis. Lewis' cross found Okafor at the top of the six, the striker headed home the chance for her 10th goal of the year.

Okafor is the first Husky to reach double digit goals in a season since Rachel Hill and Stephanie Ribiero posted double figure goals in 2016.

Senior MaryKate Ward made her third career start in goal and her first of the season. The Holliston, Mass native earned the shutout without needing to make a save with a dominant effort by the UConn defense.

The shutout is the fifth of the year for UConn and snaps a streak for three-straight without a clean sheet.

UConn now holds a five-match unbeaten streak against the Friars and have a 12-match unbeaten streak in Storrs that dates back to 1993

Next up, the Huskies head back on the road to Omaha to face the Creighton Bluejays at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday, Oct. 6
