WSOC Advances to BIG EAST Semi's With 2-0 Win At Creighton

OMAHA - The UConn women's soccer (11-4-4) secured a spot in the BIG EAST Semifinals with a 2-0 shutout at Creighton on Sunday afternoon at Morrison Stadium.

The Huskies tallied a pair of first half goals and provided a big defensive effort to earn the team's ninth shutout of the season. 

Graduate student and defender Lucy Cappadona tallied her eighth career goal with a header in the 10th minute to give UConn the early 1-0 advantage. 

Senior Anna Carson played a free kick into the box that sailed over the keeper, hit off the post and rebounded right to the head of Cappadona, who finished it off for her third goal of the season. 

BIG EAST leading goal scorer Chioma Okafor added to her total with her 12th goal of the season in the late stages of the first half (40th min). Okafor raced down a ball on the end line, serving it into the box. Alayna Taylor had her header saved but then a failed clearance fell right to Okafor. The striker made the Bluejays pay by hammering it into the back of the net. It is the fourth career goal that Okafor has scored in the BIG EAST Championship. 

Graduate student Kaitlyn Mahoney had one of her best games of the season, making four critical saves It is the 26th shutout of Mahoney's career, ranking second in program history (Bonnie Mitchell, 41.5). 

Midfielder Anaya Johnson was also key in preserving the shutout by saving a ball off the line in the 46th minute. 

The Huskies advance to the BIG EAST Semifinals for the second-straight year and will face the No. 1 seeded Georgetown Hoyas on Thursday, November 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
