WSOC Shuts Out UNH, 1-0, For First Win
DURHAM, NH - The UConn women's soccer team (1-1-1) secured its first win and first shutout of the season with a 1-0 blanking of the University of New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies dominated play throughout the toasty afternoon, stringing together passes, holding majority of possession and creating the large majority of opportunities.
UConn out shot New Hampshire 18-2 on the day including a 12-1 advantage in the first half.
The Huskies broke the tie in the 21st minute on a set piece opportunity from senior Anna Carson. The Enfield, Conn. native served a ball from 45 yards out that just missed the head of Lucy Cappadona and bounced inside the left post.
For Carson, it was her first career goal as a Husky and was the second-straight game she helped the Huskies score on a set piece.
In the warm temperatures, UConn utilized its depth with 19 players seeing time on the field.
Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mahoney notched her first shutout of the year on a pretty quiet day between the pipes. The Wildcats were only able to muster up two shots and Mahoney needed to make just one save on the afternoon.
Chioma Okafor led the Huskies with eight shots including four on goal. While Lucy Cappadona, Maddie Fried, Abbey Jones and Alayna Taylor each logged a pair of shots.
Next up, the Huskies head to Boston to face off against Boston University on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m.
