WSOC Defeat Top-Seeded Georgetown, 2-0, Headed to BIG EAST Final
BOYDS, MD. - The UConn women's soccer team (12-4-4) defeated top-seeded Georgetown, 2-0, in the BIG EAST Semifinals on Thursday night at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
The Huskies advance to the BIG EAST Final for the first time since 2008 and are seeking their first title since 2004.
Senior Maddie Fried broke the scoreless tie in the in the 27th minute with her fifth goal of the season.
The UConn defense put together another strong performance, limiting the Hoyas to just two shots on goal and secured the team's third-straight shutout and the 10th of the season for the Huskies.
Seniors Sophie McCarthy and Lucy Cappadona doubled the UConn lead in the 57th minute on a well-executed corner kick. McCarthy's service found Cappadona toward the far post and the Marlborough, Mass. headed it home for her fourth goal of the season and has now scored in back-to-back games.
It was the team-leading fourth assist of the season for McCarthy.
Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mahoney needed to make just two saves to secure her 27th career shutout.
Next up, the Huskies will face No. 2 seeded Xavier on Sunday, November 10th at 11 a.m. in the BIG EAST Final.
