WSOC Secures Dramatic Win vs. St. John's, 2-1

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team (5-2-2, 2-0 BIG EAST) captured a dramatic, 2-1, win against St. John's on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Morrone Stadium.

Junior Abbey Jones scored the game-winning just 22 seconds after St. John's evened up the score in the 88th minute, 1-1.

Junior Sophie McCarthy set up the winning goal with a pass up the far sideline to senior Cara Jordan. Jordan, who scored the Huskies first goal of the game, sent a cross towards the near post and found the left foot of Jones.

It was the second goal of the season for the Nottingham, England native and moved the Huskies record to 2-0 in BIG EAST play.

In a physical match, the Huskies jumped in front early off a left-footed strike from Jordan in the seventh minute. It was Jones that found the streaking Jordan and set the Cromwell, Conn. native to curl a shot past the keeper and into the back of the net.

The UConn defense was solid once again, keeping the Johnnies without a shot on goal until the 76th minute of the match.

On the back end of a two-game weekend, the Huskies played 19 players with 14 of them playing 35 minutes or more.

For the Huskies, it gives them a 2-0 start in conference play for the first time since 2016. It is the first time the Huskies have been 2-0 in BIG EAST Conference play since 2007.

Next up, the Huskies take on nationally-ranked Georgetown at Shaw Field on Thursday, Septemeber 28 at 3 p.m.
