WSOC Defeats Creighton, 2-0, In BIG EAST Opener

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team (4-2-2, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) defeated Creighton (2-3-4, 0-1 BIG EAST), 2-0, in its BIG EAST opener on Thursday night at Morrone Stadium.

Junior Joyce Ryder broke a scoreless first half with her first goal of the season in the 38th minute. The midfielder took a pass at midfield took a pair of touches and drilled a long ball left-footed ball over the leaping keeper and into the back of the net. 

The Huskies added to their lead early on in the second half. Chioma Okafor served a beautiful ball towards the back post that senior Cara Jordan was able to finish for her second goal of the season.

With a two goal lead, UConn was able to utilize its bench with Giovanna Dionicio, Brooke Walonis, Abbey Merchant, Izzy Gomez, Maya Mathis and Lydia LeBlanc.

The UConn defense secured its fifth shutout of the season with goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mahoney making four saves on the evening. 

The Huskies finish out the weekend with their first afternoon match of season, taking on St. John's at 1 p.m. at Morrone Stadium
