WSOC Ties Program Record With 6 All-BIG EAST, Mahoney GK of the Year

BOYDS, MD. - The UConn women's soccer team tied a program record with six Huskies earning All-BIG EAST honors on Wednesday morning. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mahoney won 2023 Goalkeeper of the Year honors.

The Huskies six honorees are the most since UConn placed six players on the All-Conference teams in 1998 and 1996 with both head coach Margaret (Tietjen) Rodriguez and associate head coach Carey (Dorn) O'Brien on both those All-BIG EAST teams. 

Jessica Mazo and Chioma Okafor earned All-BIG EAST first team honors while Kaitlyn Mahoney, Lucy Cappadona and Cara Jordan landed on the second team and Abbey Jones secured third team accolades

Mahoney becomes the fifth Husky to earn Goalkeeper of the Year recognition and the first since Randi Palacios during 2020 season that was played in the spring of 2021. 

Mazo registers All-BIG EAST for the third time in her career and is her second time on the first team. The fifth-year senior has posted a career-high four goals and has scored in back-to-back games entering the semifinals.

The sophomore, Okafor, makes her second All-BIG EAST team and is her first time making the first team. The Blantyre, Malawi native leads the Huskies with six goals this season including a pair in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals vs. Butler this past Sunday.

Mahoney has been on of the top keepers in the country this season The senior has posted 10 shutouts and holds a 0.50 goals against average. 

An All-Freshman team member, Cappadona earned second team All-BIG EAST for the first time in her career. The senior has helped the Huskies rank top 10 in the natiion with 11 shutouts in 2023. The Marlborough, Mass native also notched a game-winning goal against Providence this season.

Fifth year senior Cara Jordan and Abbey Jones both capture All-BIG EAST accolades for the first time in their careers. Jordan is second on the team with five goals and 13 points this season while Jones leads the team with four assists and has added four goals, as well. 

The six All-BIG EAST Huskies ties for the most in the league with Xavier and Georgetown also getting six players on the three teams. 

The Huskies season continues on Thursday in the BIG EAST Semifinals against Georgetown at 6:30 p.m. at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. The game will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
