WSOC Faces Georgetown in BIG EAST Semifinal
BOYDS, MD. – The UConn women's soccer team (10-3-5) takes on No. 2 seeded Georgetown (10-1-7) on Thursday, November 2 in the BIG EAST semifinals at 6:30 p.m. at the Maryland SoccerPlex. The game can be seen on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
The Huskies enter the semifinals after a dramatic 3-2 victory on Sunday against Butler. Chioma Okafor scored with 80 second remaining to lift the Huskies to their first BIG EAST Tournament win since 2012.
UConn is making its league leading 23rd appearance in the BIG EAST Championship in 24 opportunities (only missed in 2011). The Huskies are 21-16-6 all-time in the tournament. UConn has won two BIG EAST tournament championships (2002, 2004).
The Huskies tied a program record on Wednesday with six Huskies making the All-BIG EAST team. Jessica Mazo and Chioma Okafor earned first team honors while Kaitlyn Mahoney, Lucy Cappadona and Cara Jordan landed on the second team and Abbey Jones was selected to the third team.
Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mahoney was picked as the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and became the fifth Husky to earn Goalkeeper of the Year recognition and the first since Randi Palacios during 2020 season that was played in the spring of 2021.
UConn is in its best form of the season, riding a season-high four-game win streak and has been unbeaten in 11 of its last 12 matches (7-1-4).
With their victory on Sunday, the Huskies secured win No. 10 on the season, the first time into double digits in the win column since their NCAA Tournament season in 2016.
The Hoyas and Huskies played at Georgetown on September 28 and the match ended in a 0-0 draw on that afternoon. In the BIG EAST Tournament the two sides have met four times with the Huskies leading 3-1 (last meeting in 2008). Overall, UConn is 12-6-1 against Georgetown.
Entering Thursday's match, the UConn defense ranks 10th in the country with a 0.50 goals against average and are tied for 10th in the nation with 11 shutouts this year. Sunday against Butler was only the second game this season that UConn had conceded more than a one goal (Harvard).
