WSOC Secures Three Points vs. DePaul, 3-1

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team (9-4-4, 3-3-3 BIG EAST) secured three BIG EAST points with a 3-1 win vs. DePaul (4-7-5, 2-3-3 BIG EAST) on Thursday night at Morrone Stadium.

The victory moves the Huskies into fifth place with 12 points with one match remaining on Sunday against Seton Hall. With a victory against the Pirates, UConn would clinch a berth to the BIG EAST Championship.

The Huskies controlled the majority of play on Thursday night against the Blue Demons, out shooting them 14-4 and holding them to just two shots on goal.

UConn got off to a quick start with a goal from Maddie Fried just 3:10 into the match. The goal was the fourth of the season for Fried and she has scored in back-to-back home matches for the Huskies.

Just under 10 minutes later, senior Abbey Jones tallied her fourth goal of the season on a great feed from sophomore Anaya Johnson. Johnson slid a through ball between two defenders to the Nottingham, England native and Jones beat the keeper to make it 2-0 Huskies.

The score remained 2-0 until the 73rd minute when the Blue Demons created one of their few chances of the night. Freya Jupp found space inside the box and made it a one-goal game, 2-1.

The momentum shifted to the road team from Chicago but UConn had a response in the 80th minute. Senior Kelly Monaco maneuvered into the box and slid a pass to an open Abbey Merchant. The junior powered home her first career goal to give the Huskies much needed breathing room.

The Huskies closed out the final 10 minutes and secured its ninth victory of the season. UConn celebrates Senior Day on Sunday, October 27 at 1 p.m. against Seton Hall in the team's regular season finale.
