Huskies Win Two Events at the NYRA Fall Invitational
Ridgefield, NJ - The UConn Women's Rowing Team ended their Fall racing season at the NYRA Fall Invitational , racing Villanova, Holy Cross, Fairfield, and Marist. UConn had five boats compete and their best showings came in the Second Varsity 8 and Third Varsity 8 event. The second varsity 8 won their heat in the morning, defeating Villanova and Fairfield, which sent them to the A final. In that race, UConn (7:27.6) held off Holy Cross (7:28.6) and Villanova (7:44.6) for the win. In the third varsity 8, UConn won it's morning heat easily, almost a minute ahead of Fairfield. In the afternoon final, UConn won the race 19 seconds in front of Holy Cross, and 24 seconds in front of UConn's third varsity 8 B crew. In the Varsity four event, UConn hit debris in the morning race that knocked their fin off, causing them to lose steering and have to stop rowing. They raced the afternoon in the B final and came in third behind Holy Cross A and B. The Varsity 8 showed some very competitive racing in the morning with only 4 seconds separating five boats over two races. In the afternoon, the 5 teams raced in a final together and UConn finished 4th (7:27.5) behind Holy Cross (7:19.0), Marist (7:23.4) and Villanova (7:24.7) and in front of Fairfield (7:31.0).
Coach Sanford commented "Overall I'm pretty encouraged by today's racing. UConn showed good fight and composure in some pretty tight races. I love having the opportunity to shift gears from head racing to a 2K at the end of the fall season, because it gives us a good reminder of what we have to look forward to this Spring."
This concludes the Fall racing for the Huskies and they will be back in action on Friday March 15 at UCF.
