Huskies Set To Open First Round of the NCAA Tournament
NEWTON, Mass. – The No.21 UConn Women's Lacrosse team is set to open their NCAA Championship run in a first-round match against the No.13 Penn Quakers on Friday, May 12th. Opening draw is scheduled for 1:00pm EST.
This is the first matchup between the Huskies and the Quakers in program history. The Huskies will be looking for their first NCAA Tournament victory in their game this afternoon. UConn advanced to the BIG EAST conference last weekend as they hosted the tournament at home in Storrs, Conn. It was a rematch game against conference rival, Denver. The Huskies were unsuccessful in winning the conference championship but managed to earn an at-large bid to the tournament.
Kate Shaffer and Landyn White continue to earn honors on a national level for the Huskies. They were both named to the USA Lacrosse Magazine's All-American Honorable Mention list and were named to the second team of the IWLCA's Northeast Region.
This is the third consecutive year that the Huskies had earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, and fourth in program history. They squared off against Loyola in 2013, faced Virginia in 2021, and met with JMU in a rematch game last year in 2022.
Should they advance, UConn will take on No.3 Boston College on Sunday, May 14th at 1:00pm EST at the Boston College Soccer and Lacrosse Field in Newton, Mass.
Scouting No. 13 Penn
The Quakers earned a bid to the NCAA tournament by winning the Ivy League conference tournament in an overtime thriller against Yale. The Huskies previously beat Yale in their own overtime thriller contest back in mid-March. Penn is making their 16th appearance in the NCAA tournament and are 9-6 in first round games. The Quakers are led by senior, Niki Miles and sophomore, Anna Brandt.
