Huskies Close Regular Season with Senior Day Win over Xavier
STORRS, Conn. — The No. 24 nationally ranked UConn women's lacrosse team returned to Morrone Stadium for the regular season finale on Senior Day Saturday afternoon and came away with a 22-6 win over visiting Xavier.
The team's final regular season game kicked off with a Senior Day ceremony honoring their nine seniors and a violin performance of the National Anthem played by redshirt-freshman Rayae Davis.
UConn finishes the regular season 11-5 overall and 4-2 in the BIG EAST, securing the No. 3 seed in next weekend's conference tournament. Xavier closes the 2023 campaign at 4-10 and 0-6 in the league.
The Huskies came out strong with a goal 43 seconds into the game from senior Kate Shaffer, her 40th of the season. UConn got two quick goals within the first five minutes, from junior Susan Lafountain and graduate student Lia Laprise. Xavier's Jessica Harrison responded with a spin move goal at 10:37 but the Huskies went on a 8-0 run for the remainder of the first quarter with two from Grace Coon, a goal from Davis, her 20th this season, and three assists from Laprise.
Laprise started the second quarter with an unassisted goal, her 20th of the season less than a minute in. UConn's offense was quieter in the second quarter with eight total shots on net, compared to 26 in the first. Xavier added two, with a goal from sophomore Julie Cassidy at 11:11 and a free-position shot from freshman Kiera Armitage. In the last three minutes of the quarter, Laprise scored her fourth goal and Coon's third goal of the half, both assisted by Shaffer, to lead 14-3 at the end of the first half.
A back and forth third quarter saw the Huskies outscore the Musketeers 4-3 and hold a 18-6 lead into the final frame. The fourth quarter started with a nine-minute scoring drought for both teams before Place put one in the back of the net with an unassisted goal at 6:26. Megan Whitley got a solo goal shortly after, her first of the season. Lauren Barry scored two quick goals in the last few minutes to close out the scoring, finishing off her a hat trick for the day.
UConn returns to Morrone to host the Big East Tournament on Friday May 5th. The No. 3 seeded Huskies will face either Marquette or Denver in the first round Friday at 1 pm.
