Davis' Career Day Boosts UConn to Home Win Over Fairfield
STORRS, Conn.- A career-high six goals from attacker Rayea Davis ignited an offensive explosion for UConn lacrosse, as the Huskies took down Fairfield 18-5 on Wednesday afternoon to move to 2-0 on the season.
First Quarter:
Davis came out of the gate firing on the offensive end, scoring the first four goals for the Huskies, punctuated by two free-position goals to get UConn up 4-0 within the first ten minutes of the game. Fairfield got on the board late in the first, as Kelly Haggerty converted a free-position goal to cut the lead to 4-1 going into the second.
Second Quarter:
Mary Henry cut into the UConn advantage in the first minute of the quarter, bringing the Stags within 2. Davis tallied her fifth goal of the day and was immediately followed by Karsyn Burnash's second goal of the season, to rebuild the Husky lead to 6-2. Anna Magennis scored the first goal of her Husky career off of a sweet pass from Ava Plata to pad the lead for the hosts further. Fairfield attempted to chip into the margin with a Haley Burns free-position goal, but Burnash struck again to run the lead to 8-3. More UConn milestones were reached in the second, as Megan O'Brien secured the first goal of her young Husky career. Davis set her new career-high for goals in a single game (6) with time winding down in the half, as UConn took a comfortable 10-3 lead into the locker room.
Third Quarter:
Saturday's hero Eve McGrogan got the scoring going in the second half with her fourth goal of the season. Defender Abby Beran notched the first goal of her UConn tenure, with an impressive display of moves to stretch the lead to 12-3. Eliza Bowman scored two goals in the period to kickstart the running clock, extending the UConn lead to 14-4.
