Huskies Defeat Villanova Wildcats

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's lacrosse team (6-5, 2-1) defeated the Villanova Wildcats in a rainy afternoon game on Wednesday, April 3rd.

UConn took control of the game early, with goals from Rayea Davis and Morgan Carter to put the Huskies on top over the Wildcats. A goal from Villanova's Mary Moore would interrupt the Husky offense at 6:47. The Huskies then went on to notch five goals in a row, one more each from Carter and Davis, two from Eliza Bowman, and one from Jenna Giardina. Another Wildcat goal at 00:37 rounded out the first quarter.

The Huskies continued their offensive pursuit into the second period as three more players each notched goals; Kate Shaffer, Lauren Barry, and Abby Charron. Villanova ended the half scoring two more goals to make it 10-4.

UConn outscored Villanova, 6-2, in the second half. Charron notched her second goal of the game, while Shaffer added another two and Carter added one. Susan Lafoutain and Shea van den Broek each had one for the Huskies as they solidified the win over the Wildcats with a running clock in the final minute of the game.

The Huskies totaled three career highs in their win over the Villanova Wildcats today. Kate Shaffer surpassed 150 career goals, Maddy George surpassed 250 career draw controls, and Landyn White surpassed 700 saves and officially holds the program record in total goalkeeper wins at UConn with 45.

The UConn defense posted another impressive game, causing 13 turnovers, collecting 16 ground balls, and winning 18 draw controls. Grad transfer, JoJo Gum caused a season-high three turnovers and collected two ground balls in the win.

UConn will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio this upcoming weekend for a matchup with the Xavier Musketeers. Opening draw is set for Saturday, April 6th at 12:00 pm EST.
