Lacrosse Sets New Single-Game Program Goal Record in Demolition of Xavier
STORRS, Conn.- UConn women's lacrosse set a new single-game program record with 24 goals on Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 24-8 victory over the Xavier Musketeers at Morrone Stadium.
Eliza Bowman (Greenwich, Conn.) wasted no time getting the Huskies on the board, converting on the woman-up advantage one minute into the game. Bowman recorded a hat trick just six minutes into the game, sandwiching a goal from Karsyn Burnash (Adams Center, NY) that built a rapid 4-0 UConn lead. Eve McGrogan (Nyack, N.Y.) scored on the free-position and Bowman found the back of the net for the fourth time to get the Huskies up to half-dozen in the opening period. Grace Winkler (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored her first career goal for the Huskies for their seventh goal of the quarter. Jenna Giardina (South Salem, N.Y.) and Rayea Davis (Henrietta, N.Y.) each scored two goals in the closing minutes of the first quarter, turning the UConn goal total up to eleven going into the second.
More milestones occurred in the second quarter, as Caitlyn Hubiak (Coatesville, Pa.) got her career day started with the first goal of her UConn career. Emma Dacey (Hopkinton, Mass.) got on the board, with Giardina and Davis each scoring another goal apiece to put UConn up 15-5 at the break.
After Davis capped off the hat trick, Hubiak went on a solo flurry, scoring three goals in just four minutes in the third quarter to bring her career day to four goals. In the fourth, it was a UConn coronation, as Ava Plata (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Madison Sweeney (Stamford, Conn.) each added two goals, with Sweeney's last goal breaking the single-game program record for goals in a game, as the Huskies rolled over the Musketeers, 24-8.
Historical Notes:
- The 24 goals broke the single-game program record, surpassing the mark of 23 set on February 27th. 2022 and February 24th, 2022.
- The 38 points were the most in a single game in program history (35 on on 2/27/22)
- Winkler and Hubiak scored the first goals of their UConn career, with the latter adding three more to cap off a career day
- Riley Daly (Ipswich, Mass.) recorded a career-high 13 draw controls in the win
- Barlow Clark-Schoeb (West Hartford, Conn.) also set a new career-high with 8 draw controls
Up Next: The Huskies wrap up the regular season next Saturday in Storrs, taking on Georgetown at 12pm. Prior to the game, UConn will recognize their graduating senior class.
