Lacrosse Falls to JMU in Maryland
SPARKS- UConn lacrosse suffered their first loss of the 2025 season on Saturday, falling to #22/ #18 James Madison at the US Lacrosse Facility on a snowy early afternoon in Maryland.
First Quarter: UConn- 2, JMU- 0
The Huskies jumped in front on Emma Dacey's first goal of the season, converting a find from Jenna Giardina. UConn's defense was strong throughout the period, with successful clears and three saves from Tori Cini to keep JMU off the board early. Eve McGrogan converted a free position shot to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
Second Quarter: JMU- 5, UConn- 3
JMU quickly responded in the first minute of the second, with Olivia Mattis scoring a goal on the advantage, and Olivia Matthews tying the score with a free-position goal. Rayea Davis scored her 10th goal of the season for UConn, but Maddie Epke answered for the Dukes four minutes later to tie the game at 3-all. Matthews scored her second of the period and Savannah Derey added another tally to send the Dukes into halftime with a 5-3.
Third Quarter: JMU- 8, UConn- 4
UConn capitalized on a JMU yellow card that ended the second quarter, as Eliza Bowman took the feed from Giardina to close the gap to 5-4. However, the Dukes continued to keep up the offensive intensity, rattling off three goals in a row. Epke scored her second and third goals of the afternoon, sandwiching a Lauren Savage goal to pad the Dukes' lead to 8-4 entering the final frame.
Fourth Quarter/FINAL: JMU- 11, UConn- 8
The Huskies attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter's opening minutes, with Davis scoring her second goal of the day in a woman-down situation, and Ava Plata scoring two minutes later to shave the JMU margin to just 8-6. Epke stifled the UConn rally, converting on the advantage after a UConn green card for her fourth goal of the afternoon and eleventh of the season. Derey and Chloe Bleckley scored on free-position shots to jump the Dukes' lead back to 11-7. Bowman and Plata added their second goals of the game, respectively, but it would not be enough, as UConn fell to 2-1 on the season.
