Lacrosse Picks Up Road Win Over Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y.- Behind a second-quarter offensive flurry, UConn women's lacrosse picked up their sixth win of the 2025 season, defeating Columbia University 10-7 on a sunny afternoon in New York.  

How it Happened:

The host Lions got the scoring started, scoring the game's first goal four and a half minutes into the game. Megan O'Brien (Morris Plains, N.J.) equalized the score a minute later, bringing the Huskies level at 1-1. Tori Cini (Syosset, N.Y.) made three saves in the early going to keep Columbia at bay. Eve McGrogan (Nyack, N.Y.) vaulted UConn in front, firing an unassisted goal in for a 2-1 Husky lead. Ava Plata (Orchard Park, N.Y.)  added to the advantage, scoring the third UConn goal of the quarter with just over three minutes to play. Columbia answered with two quick goals, evening up the game at 3-all. Eliza Bowman (Greenwich, Conn.) scored on the free-position to take UConn into the second quarter with a 4-3 lead.

O'Brien scored her second goal of the afternoon to kickstart the scoring in the second quarter to give the Huskies a multi-goal lead at 5-3. Plata converted on her free-position attempt with five minutes left in the quarter, stretching the UConn lead to 6-3. Bowman joined the multi-goal crew, firing in her second of the half for the fourth unanswered UConn goal of the quarter. Rayea Davis (Henrietta, N.Y.) got involved in the scoring, with her team leading 29th goal of the year to keep the foot on the gas for the Huskies in the second.

After Cini came out of the game in the second, Sofia Oximana (Seattle, Wash.) came into the game and held it down on the defensive end with three saves. The Lions inched closer to close the gap to 8-5, but Oximana made three more saves in the third to get UConn to the fourth still ahead 8-5.

Chandler McHale (Milton, Ga.) scored her first career goal at the start of the fourth to get the visitors an insurance goal to go up 9-5. Jenna Giardina (South Salem, N.Y.) provided the dagger on the free position in with three minutes to play, her fourth point of the afternoon for UConn's 10th goal of the afternoon, punctuating a hard-fought road victory.

Statistical Notes:

The seven saves from Oximana were a career-high for the goalkeeper from Seattle, Washington. McHale scored her first career goal in the fourth quarter. Abby Beran (Wading River, N.Y.) had a career high six ground balls in the win.Giardina kept her multi-point streak alive, leading the way with 4 points on the afternoon (1 goal, 3 assists).

Up Next: UConn begins BIG EAST play this Saturday, traveling to Pennsylvania to face conference foe Villanova at 1pm.
