Third period surge catapults Huskies over Vermont
STORRS, Conn. – The No. 15 ranked UConn women's hockey team defeated the Vermont Catamounts, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Toscano Family Ice Forum. The Huskies came from behind, scoring two unanswered goals in the third period led by freshman forward Claire Murdoch.
Megan Warrener made her ninth start of the season in between the pipes for the Huskies. The senior made 21 saves in the win.
Murdoch opened the scoring for the Huskies midway through the first period, scoring in her second consecutive game.
Vermont tied the game at one just a few minutes later off the stick of Julia Mesplede, her first goal of the season.
Vermont took a 2-1 lead just before the end of the first period, as Oona Havana scored her first goal of the season. UConn led in shots 11-10 in the first period.
Vermont remained in front through the second period, but UConn held a lot of possession in their offensive zone as the Huskies outshot the Catamounts 16-8 in the second period.
UConn found the equalizer with just over ten minutes to go in the third period, as junior defender Meghane Duchesne-Chalifoux scored her second goal of the season, knotting the game at two.
Murdoch went on to score the game winner with seven minutes remaining in regulation, recording her first career multi-goal game. Murdoch now has a team high nine goals this season.
