No.1 Seed Huskies Advance to Semifinals with Win Over Holy Cross
STORRS, Conn. - The No. 1 seeded UConn women's ice hockey team took down Holy Cross by a score of 4-2 at Toscano Family Ice Forum on Saturday afternoon. Senior forward Jada Habisch led the way with two points including a goal and an assist.
Senior captain Coryn Tormala knocked in her sixth goal of the season to open the scoring and the Huskies would go on to keep the shots on target going throughout the game totaling 24.
In the first, the Huskies would head to a penalty kill on a holding call in the first three minutes of the game. UConn would go on to kill the penalty. Then, six minutes later, the Huskies would respond with a power play of their own on a hooking penalty, and the Huskies would succeed with a Coryn Tormala rocket to the top shelf. After the period, UConn led in shots on target by one with five. The score stayed at 1-0.
The Huskies kept the aggression going in the second period as they were awarded another power play on a body checking penalty in the first few minutes of the second. The Crusaders killed the penalty. UConn would control the zone throughout the period ripping nine shots on goal. Halfway through the period, the Huskies would go on another scoring sequence as Jada Habisch launched a shot on target and as the goaltender went to block it away, Ashley Allard was in front of goal for the pickup to make it 2-0 Huskies. Then, Holy Cross would get its second power play of the game on a roughing penalty, but the Huskies expired the foul. Soon after, UConn headed to a third penalty kill on a cross checking call. However, the disadvantage the Huskies began with, turned into a UConn shorthanded goal with under two minutes to go in the period. Habisch got the dish from Camryn Wong to then have open ice in the Crusader's zone. Habisch fired one low to the goalie's stick side in the bottom left side of the net for the 3-0 lead. However, seconds later Holy Cross would get on the board at even strength with a goal scored by Lily Feeney. The score stayed at 3-1 after the second.
In two minutes of the third period, the Huskies tacked on another goal. Going from Ava Rinker to Emma Eryou, Eryou served one into dangerous territory in the Crusader's zone and Brianna Ware got a stick on it to tip it over the goalie's stick and found the back of the net in top left corner. Two minutes later, UConn earned its third power play on an interference penalty, but Holy Cross killed the foul call. At 10:16, the Crusaders put in another one with a review call on offsides. Holy Cross would get the review to go its way to cut the deficit to two at 4-2. Then, a fourth power play occurred for UConn with a body checking penalty, but neither team would score. The Huskies would finish with 24 shots on target and 12 in the period to Holy Cross's 13 total and seven in the period; and the final score stayed at 4-2.
