Huskies Outlast Maine in Overtime
ORONO, Maine – The No. 15 ranked UConn women's hockey team defeated the Maine Black Bears in overtime, 4-3 on Saturday night at Alfond Arena. Junior forward Kyla Josifovic scored the game winner in overtime, giving UConn their third straight win.
The game was scoreless through the first period as UConn led in shots 19-10 in the first frame.
Maine opened the scoring on the power play off the stick of Adriana Van De Leest, her second goal of the season, making it 1-0.
Maine doubled their lead on another power play goal from Frederikke Foss, her first goal of the season.
UConn responded just a few minutes later with a power play goal of their own as senior forward Jada Habisch netted a goal in consecutive games, and her fifth of the season.
UConn found an equalizer with under a minute left in the second period, as senior forward Riley Grimley netted her second goal of the season, making it 2-2 heading into the third period.
Junior forward Christina Walker gave UConn their first lead of the game just 12 seconds into the third period, making it 3-2. Walker now has two goals this season.
Maine found an equalizer with just 2:31 left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Lily Fetch scored her fifth goal of the season for the Black Bears, knotting the game at three.
Maine committed a two minute minor penalty with one minute left in regulation, giving the Huskies an extra skater advantage for the first minute of the overtime period. UConn took advantage, scoring the game winner just 38 seconds into overtime. This is the second consecutive game Josifovic records the game winning goal for the Huskies, giving her a team high four game winner's this season. Josifovic now has a season high six goals so far in her junior season.
