Huskies Extinguish Flames, Advance To BIG EAST Championship
PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – The UConn women's field hockey team advances to the BIG EAST Championship game after defeating no.4 Liberty by a final of 2-1 in the semi-final match. The Huskies came back from a 1-0 deficit, receiving goals from Juana Garcia and Sophie Perschk in the third quarter.
The Huskies fell behind early as Liberty was able to open the scoring off a penalty corner in the first quarter. The Huskies looked to even the scoring however the Flames defense prevented the Huskies from generating many offensive chances. Liberty's defense carried the momentum into the second quarter, preventing UConn from tying the game. With the Huskies offense stopped, Liberty entered the half leading by one.
The third quarter was all UConn. The Huskies found the tying goal early in the third as freshman Juul Sauer fired a shot on goal that was deflected and eventually poked home by junior Juana Garcia. The Huskies didn't stop there as later in the quarter freshman Sophie Persch was in the right place at the right time to fire a rebound past the Liberty defense and goalkeeper. The one goal lead was all UConn needed as their defense was able to shut Liberty down for the third quarter, and head into the fourth quarter with a one goal lead.
The fourth quarter was a defensive battle as UConn looked to maintain the one goal lead. Liberty had multiple chances to find the tying goal including four penalty corners, but the Huskies defense and was strong, turning away every chance they faced. Liberty pulled their goalkeeper with time running down in the quarter but were unable to find the tying goal as UConn came away with the win and advances to the BIG EAST Championship game.
The Huskies will await the winner of Temple vs. Old Dominion for the championship game, which will take place Sunday November. 10 at 1pm. The game can be streamed live on the Big East Digital Network and Flo Sports.
