Huskies Win OT Thriller Over #13 St. Joseph's

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's field hockey team opens the 2024 season with a thrilling 5-4 overtime victory. Senior Sophia Ugo pitched in two goals including the game winner with two minutes remaining in overtime.

The Huskies came out firing scoring two minutes into the start of the game as freshman Juul Sauer tipped home a pass from fellow freshman Milaw Clause. The Huskies defense would stay strong as they held St. Joseph's scoreless in the first quarter.

The Hawks bounced back in the second quarter, tying it up early, putting pressure back on the Huskies. After a back and forth second quarter the Huskies regained the lead as senior Sophia Ugo beat the buzzer and scored on a tip in goal with one second remaining in the half.

The Huskies stayed hot after the half as they scored two more goals in the third quarter, courtesy of Juana Garcia and Juul Sauer. The Huskies defense continued to keep the Hawks in check as they entered the final quarter with the three-goal lead. St. Joseph's did not stay quiet for long as they scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to tie the game and force overtime. In the overtime frame, both teams had their scoring chances, but the Huskies ultimately found the back of the net as senior Sophia Ugo scored her second of the match sealing the victory for the Huskies.

UConn will be back in action Sunday September 1 to wrap up the weekend with a matchup against the University of New Hampshire Wild Cats.
