Huskies Set For Non-Conference Matchups against Cornell and #9 Rutgers
STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's field hockey team is back in action this weekend for two games beginning with a home game Friday against Cornell, before hitting the road for a matchup against Rutgers University.
The Huskies start the weekend with their third home game of the season. UConn is coming off a 2-0 weekend which featured a total of 11 goals scored. Leading the charge for the Huskies has been senior Sophia Ugo and Freshman Juul Sauer the reigning BIG EAST Player and Freshman of the Week. The duo has combined for six of the teams 11 goals and look to stay hot heading into the weekend.
The matchup Friday will be the first game of the 2024 season for Cornell. The Big Red return nine starters and 19 letterwinners from the 2023 squad which set team records for goals (58), assists (62), points (178) and wins (12). The Huskies currently lead the series matchup 2-1 with the last meeting taking place last season which ended with a 2-1 Cornell Victory.
The match is set to kick off at 1pm and can be streamed live on UConn+.
Following the matchup at home vs. Cornell, the Huskies will be on the move for their first road trip of the 2024 season. UConn will travel to Piscataway, New Jersey to take on the no. 9 ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Rutgers currently sits at 1-0 on the season and will face off against Monmouth College Friday. The lone win for Rutgers was a 5-0 victory over Vermont, which featured four different goal scorers. The Scarlet Knights outshot the Catamounts 28-9 in the match and finished with an 8-66 mark in penalty corners. The game is set to begin at noon on Sunday, September 8 and can be streamed live on BigTen+.
